Present Continuous (Şimdiki Zaman)
The present continuous tense (şimdiki zaman) in Turkish expresses actions happening right now, ongoing activities, or temporary situations.
It is one of the most common tenses in daily speech and is roughly equivalent to the English “I am doing”.
Mood:
- Indicative mood = describing actions in progress or temporary states.
Aspect:
- Progressive (continuous) — focuses on ongoing or developing actions.
Voice:
- Active voice is standard.
Passive, reflexive, or causative forms can be added with extra suffixes.
Formation
The present continuous is formed by adding the suffix -yor (with vowel harmony: -ıyor, -iyor, -uyor, -üyor) to the verb stem, followed by personal endings.
If the verb stem ends in a vowel, a buffer consonant -y- is inserted before -yor.

- Şimdi ders çalışıyorum. (I am studying right now.)
Temporary or ongoing situations
- Ankara’da kalıyorum. (I am staying in Ankara.)
Repeated actions around now
- Son zamanlarda çok çalışıyorum. (I’ve been working a lot lately.)
Near future plans (informal)
- Yarın tatile gidiyoruz. (We’re going on vacation tomorrow.)
Examples
- Affirmative: Film izliyorum. (I’m watching a movie.)
- Negative: Film izlemiyorum. (I’m not watching a movie.)
- Interrogative: Film izliyor musun? (Are you watching a movie?)
Notes
- Vowel harmony determines the form of -yor:
- -ıyor (a, ı), -iyor (e, i), -uyor (o, u), -üyor (ö, ü).
- Negation: insert -me / -ma before -yor:
- gelmiyorum, yazmıyorum.
- Questions: use mi / mı / mu / mü:
- Gel*iyor musun?* (Are you coming?)
- The vowel of -yor never changes; only the vowel before it follows harmony.
- In informal speech, Onlar geliyorlar is often shortened to Onlar geliyor.

There are no true irregulars, but some verbs show stem changes before -yor:
