Future Tense (Gelecek Zaman)
The future tense (gelecek zaman) in Turkish expresses plans, intentions, or predictions about the future.
It corresponds to the English “will” or “going to” and is commonly used in both spoken and written Turkish.
Mood:
- Indicative mood = describing future facts, intentions, and expectations.
Aspect:
- Simple (non-progressive) — refers to actions that will occur later.
Voice:
- Active voice is standard.
Passive and causative forms can be made with additional suffixes.
Formation
The future tense is formed by adding the suffix -ecek / -acak (depending on vowel harmony) to the verb stem, followed by personal endings.

Future plans and intentions
- Yarın sinemaya gideceğim. (I will go to the cinema tomorrow.)
Predictions or expectations
- Hava güzel olacak. (The weather will be nice.)
Promises or decisions made at the moment of speaking
- Sana yardım edeceğim. (I will help you.)
Commands or warnings in polite form
- Bunu unutmayacaksın! (You will not forget this!)
Examples
- Affirmative: Kitap okuyacakım. (I will read a book.)
- Negative: Kitap okumayacakım. (I will not read a book.)
- Interrogative: Kitap okuyacak mısın? (Will you read a book?)
Notes
- Vowel harmony determines the form: -ecek (front vowels e, i, ö, ü), -acak (back vowels a, ı, o, u).
- Negation: add -me / -ma before -ecek / -acak:
- gelmeyeceğim (I won’t come).
- Questions: add mi / mı / mu / mü:
- Gel*eceğ misin?* (Will you come?)
- In colloquial speech, ğ may be silent: geliceğim instead of geleceğim.
- Future tense may also express polite orders or strong intentions.
